Chewy or hard candies –
Children get lured by candies. But for them caramelized candies are a big no. These tastes good but they stick into the irregular surfaces of teeth (pit and fissures) and become difficult to remove thereby inviting dental caries. These are even more difficult to remove when you are under orthodontic treatment. But you love chocolates then you can either opt for non sugar candies or dark chocolates. On the other hand children should not eat hard candies. It is because any uneven pressure while chewing may cause fillings to come out and crack the teeth.
Potato chips –
No doubt these are full of starch and are the favorite past time snacks of people of all age groups. But with the crunchiness of the first bite and gradually becoming sticky towards the end of the bite is the matter of concern. These stick in between the teeth and leads to continuous acid secretion as we go on chewing chips thereby inviting tooth decay.
Hard toasted bread –
Everybody needs a toast of bread in the morning but if it is not hard and lightly toasted then its good enough. If your child is undergoing any dental treatment, then you should avoid hard toasted bread.
White bread –
The stickiness of the bread is the reason why it is avoided. The remnants don’t get off easily and so there is formation of plaque hence, causing dental problems.
Corn cob –
Kernels of corn should be detached from the cob and then given to the children to eat rather than allowing them to bite the cob itself. This might cause breakage of teeth, crack the restorative fillings, break the braces and can also dislodge the dentures. So, these patients should definitely avoid eating corns.
Biting the whole of an apple with the front teeth is not wise as you might end up with broken teeth. An apple a day keeps doctor away, so it cannot be avoided. But it is the duty of the parents to cut the apple into cubes or pieces and then give children to eat one by one.
Citrus fruits –
Citrus fruits such as grapefruit, orange are rich in nutrients but at the same time the citric acid if consumed excessively destroys the enamel of teeth and causing attrition of the teeth. So, in order to dilute the acid attack, drink plenty of water.
